DP stands for display picture. On Instagram it means the round photo shown at the top of a profile, next to a username in comments, and beside a name in the direct message list.

Instagram itself never uses the word. In the app the setting is called “profile photo,” and the button reads Edit profile → Change profile photo. DP is user vocabulary, not platform vocabulary, which is why searching Instagram’s own help pages for it returns nothing.

The four names for one image

Term Full form Who uses it
DP Display picture South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal
PFP Instagram DP size and resolution Younger users globally, especially on X, Discord and TikTok
Profile photo Instagram’s own interface
Avatar Generic web and forum usage

All four describe the same file. There is no technical difference between a DP and a PFP — only who is saying it and where they learned the word.

Where “DP” came from

The term predates Instagram by more than a decade. It entered common use through desktop messengers — MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and later BlackBerry Messenger — where the small image beside your screen name was labelled a display picture. WhatsApp carried the phrasing into the smartphone era across South Asia, and users brought it with them to Instagram.

That history explains the regional split. Someone who came to social media through WhatsApp says DP. Someone who came through TikTok or Discord says PFP. Both are correct.

What DP does not stand for

DP is not “desktop profile,” “display profile,” “digital picture” or “profile display.” These expansions appear on several tool sites and are simply wrong. The word is display — as in the image displayed beside your name — and picture.

DP on other platforms

The term travels. WhatsApp DP, Facebook DP and Telegram DP all mean the same thing: the profile image on that platform. When someone says “change your DP” they mean it wherever you are, not specifically on Instagram.

Each platform stores its own copy, though. Changing your Instagram DP Download does not change your WhatsApp one. The exception is Threads, which shares its profile picture with the linked Instagram account — change it in one and it changes in both.

Common phrases built on DP

Understanding these makes most DP-related searches readable:

  • No DP — an account using the default grey silhouette, often read as a new, inactive or fake account
  • DP change — replacing your current profile picture, sometimes announced as a small event
  • Matching DP or couple DP — two accounts using halves of one image, or two images from the same set
  • DP lagana (Hindi/Urdu) — to put up a display picture
  • DP hide — restricting who can see it, which is a WhatsApp feature rather than an Instagram one

Is a DP public?

Yes, on Instagram it is public by default and there is no setting to hide it.

Your display picture appears in search results, in comment threads, beside message requests and in follower lists — including when your account is set to private. Instagram treats it as an identifier rather than as content, which is why privacy settings that lock your posts do not lock it.

This is a deliberate design choice. When a stranger sends you a follow request or a message request, you see their picture in order to decide. That only works if pictures stay visible on accounts you do not follow.

If you would prefer not to be identifiable, the practical option is choosing what the image shows — a logo, an illustration, a landscape, or a photo that does not clearly show your face.

DP versus profile picture in Instagram’s own features

Instagram has separate concepts that sound similar and are not:

  • Profile photo — the image this page is about
  • Story ring — the coloured circle drawn around a DP when the account has an active story; it is interface, not part of the image
  • Note — a short text bubble that appears above a DP in the inbox
  • Avatar — Instagram’s cartoon character feature, which is a separate creation and only becomes your DP if you set it as one

What is a no-DP account?

An account still using Instagram’s default grey silhouette. It often indicates a new, inactive or throwaway account, though plenty of ordinary users simply never set one.
