Tap your profile photo in Edit profile and choose Remove current photo. Your account reverts to Instagram’s default grey silhouette. You do not need to upload a substitute.
This is the option most people miss, because the change-photo menu leads with the upload choices and the removal option sits at the bottom.
On the app
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap your current profile picture, or Change photo.
- Scroll to Remove current photo and tap it.
- Confirm.
Your account now shows the Instagram DP Download.
On desktop
- Sign in at instagram.com.
- Click your profile picture, then Edit profile.
- Click Change profile photo.
- Choose Remove current photo.
If the removal option is missing
Some versions of the app place it differently or omit it entirely.
Update the app. The option has moved between versions and older builds sometimes lack it.
Use the desktop site. instagram.com reliably offers removal even when a mobile build does not.
Use a blank image as a fallback. Upload a plain white or grey square. This is not the same as removing — you will show a blank tile rather than the default silhouette — but it achieves a similar visual result if removal is unavailable.

The image stops being served publicly. It cannot be retrieved by other users or by any external tool once removed.
What it does not do
It does not delete the picture from Instagram’s systems immediately. Removal stops public serving. Whether and when the file is fully deleted from backend storage is governed by Meta’s data retention policy, not by the removal action.
It does not remove it from other platforms. If you used the same image on WhatsApp, Facebook or Threads, each holds its own copy. The exception is Threads, which shares its profile picture with the linked Instagram account — removing it on Instagram affects Threads too.
It does not remove copies others already saved. Anyone who downloaded or screenshotted it still has that file. Removal is forward-looking only.
It does not clear third-party caches instantly. Search engines and other services that indexed the image may show it for some time afterwards.

The trade-off worth knowing
A no-DP account reads as new, inactive or fake to many people. That has practical consequences: follow requests are more likely to be declined, message requests are more likely to be ignored, and business accounts lose recognisability in search.
