In Edit profile, open your photo menu and choose Remove current photo. The account returns to Instagram’s default grey silhouette. You do not need to upload a replacement image.
Many people miss this control because the menu leads with upload options and places removal lower in the list. On the app
- Profile → Edit profile.
- Tap the circular photo.
- Choose Remove current photo (wording may vary slightly by app version).
- Confirm.
On desktop
- Profile → Edit profile → Change profile photo.
- Select the remove / delete current photo option when shown.
- Save if the page asks you to confirm.
If the removal option is missing
- Update the Instagram app
- Try desktop web or another device
- Confirm you are editing your own account, not a professional dashboard you cannot fully control
What removing it actually does
It clears the custom profile image Instagram displays next to your username. Surfaces that showed your face now show the default silhouette.
What it does not do
- Does not delete your posts, stories archive, or tagged photos
- Does not erase third-party copies of the old DP that already saved it
- Does not hide your username or bio
Why people remove it
Privacy resets, job or school contexts, account cleanups, or waiting until a new photo is ready.
The trade-off
Accounts with no custom DP can look newer or less trustworthy to some viewers. That is a social signal, not a technical block.

Can I undo a removal?
Only by uploading a photo again. Instagram does not auto-restore the previous file from a public history UI.
Does removal notify people?
No special “DP removed” blast. People notice the silhouette when they next see you.
Is a silhouette safer?
