Tap your profile photo in Edit profile and choose a new image. The change is instant and applies everywhere your account appears — search, comments, direct messages and follow requests.

On the Instagram app

  1. Open Instagram and tap your Instagram DP Download at the bottom right.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap your current picture, or Change photo.
  4. Choose New profile picture to select from your camera roll, or Take photo to use the camera.
  5. Position the image inside the circular frame — pinch to zoom, drag to reposition.
  6. Tap Done, then Save if prompted.

On desktop

  1. Go to instagram.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Edit profile.
  3. Click Change profile photo.
  4. Choose Upload photo and select the file.
  5. The image is cropped centrally and saved.

Desktop offers no repositioning control — it crops from the centre. If framing matters, crop the file to a square yourself before uploading, or use the app.

Other ways to set one

From an existing post. Open the post, tap the three dots, and if the option appears you can set it as your profile picture. Availability varies by version.

From your Instagram Avatar. If you have created an Avatar, you can set it as your profile picture from the Avatar section in settings.

By importing from Facebook. If your accounts are linked through Accounts Centre, you can copy the profile picture across. Changing it on one does not automatically change the other unless you choose to sync.

What Instagram allows as a profile picture

Instagram applies its Community Guidelines to profile pictures, and enforces them more visibly here than elsewhere because the image appears in search and recommendations.

Not permitted:

  • Nudity or sexually explicit imagery
  • Graphic violence or gore
  • Hate symbols and hate speech imagery
  • Content promoting self-harm or eating disorders
  • Terrorist or organised-crime imagery
  • Images used to impersonate another person or brand

Permitted but sometimes restricted in reach:

  • Political imagery, which may affect recommendation eligibility
  • Content associated with regulated goods
  • Borderline suggestive imagery

Practical constraints:

  • No animation. GIFs upload as a single still frame.
  • No video. Profile pictures are static images.
  • No transparency. PNG transparency is flattened, usually to white.
  • No text overlay restriction technically, but text is illegible at display size.

Technical requirements

Property Requirement
Format JPG or PNG
Aspect ratio 1:1 square
Recommended upload Instagram DP size (1080×1080) px
Minimum usable 320 × 320 px
Colour space sRGB

Anything above 1080×1080 is resized down. Rectangular images are cropped to a square during upload.

When the change does not appear

Others still see the old picture. Caching. Instagram serves profile pictures from a content delivery network, and the previous version can persist for others for several hours. It resolves on its own.

The upload fails. Check your connection, restart the app, and confirm the file is a JPG or PNG under a reasonable size. Very large files fail more often on weak connections.

The picture reverts. Usually an incomplete upload. Try again on Wi-Fi.

The new picture looks soft. The source file was too small or already compressed. Instagram cannot add detail that was not uploaded.

The picture was how to remove your Instagram DPd by Instagram. If it breached the guidelines, the account is reset to the default silhouette and a notification is usually sent.

How often can you change it?

There is no published limit for normal use. Changing it many times in a short period can trigger automated spam protection, which temporarily blocks further changes. Waiting a few hours clears it.

What happens to the Instagram DP history

Instagram does not display a public history of previous profile pictures. Once replaced, the earlier image is no longer shown anywhere on your profile and cannot be retrieved by others through any tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my Instagram profile picture?

Tap your profile, then Edit profile, then your current picture. Choose a new image from your camera roll or take one, position it, and save.

Can I change my Instagram DP on a computer?

Yes. Sign in at instagram.com, open Edit profile and click Change profile photo. Desktop crops from the centre with no repositioning control.

Why does my new DP still show as the old one to others?

Caching. Instagram serves profile pictures from a CDN and the old version can persist for other users for a few hours before updating.

Can I use a GIF or video as my Instagram DP?

No. Profile pictures are static images. A GIF uploads as a single still frame.

Is there a limit on how often I can change it?

No published limit, but changing it repeatedly in quick succession can trigger a temporary block from spam protection. It clears within hours.

What size should my Instagram DP be?

1080 × 1080 pixels, square, exported as sRGB JPG. The minimum usable size is 320 × 320.

Can Instagram remove my profile picture?

Yes, if it breaches the Community Guidelines. The account reverts to the default silhouette and you are normally notified.
