Open Edit profile, tap the current photo, and choose a new image. The update applies everywhere your account appears — profile, search, comments, DMs, and follow requests — as soon as Instagram finishes processing the upload.

On the Instagram app
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap the circular photo (or “Change profile photo”).
- Choose a library image, take a new photo, or use an Instagram Avatar if offered.
- Adjust the crop so the face or logo sits in the centre circle, then confirm.
On desktop
- Open instagram.com and sign in.
- Go to your profile → Edit profile.
- Select Change profile photo and upload a square image.
- Confirm the crop and save.

All of them still end as one profile photo file — not a separate “DP type.”
What Instagram allows
JPG and PNG work. Keep the meaningful subject inside the centre circle. Avoid tiny text. Instagram may reject or limit images that violate community guidelines.
Technical requirements
Prefer a 1080×1080 sRGB export under ~1 MB. Uploading larger does not unlock extra stored detail beyond Instagram’s DP ceiling.
When the change does not appear
- Hard-refresh the app or clear cache
- Check another device — CDN lag can last a few minutes
- Confirm you edited the correct account if you use multiple logins
How often can you change it?
Instagram does not publish a useful daily change quota for normal personal use. Rapid flipping can look spammy to viewers but is not a documented “DP rate limit” for typical users.
What happens to the previous photo

Does changing my DP notify followers?
Instagram does not send a dedicated “DP changed” push to all followers. People notice when they next see your profile or comments.
Can I schedule a DP change?
Not with Instagram’s native profile editor. Third-party schedulers that ask for your password are a safety risk.
